Established in 1966 as the result of founder Piero Ambrogio Busnelli’s entrepreneurial instinct, B&B Italia has built its success on the ability to represent contemporary culture through design and to anticipate trends, constantly seeking to respond to changes in taste and living needs. Once Upon A Time in
Novedrate, Italy
In 1965, during a time when the furniture industry centered around handicraft production, Piero Ambrogio discovered a way to industrialize the production process with injection molding cold polyurethane, an extremely versatile, durable, and malleable material.
It was 1966 when Piero Ambrogio founded C&B as a joint venture with Cesare Cassina, and together a modern industrial and technological approach shakes the world of upholstered items.
The partnership lasted seven years, as Piero Ambrogio Busnelli purchased Cassina’s shares in 1973 and changed the name of the company to B&B Italia with a new HQ building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers in Novedrate, Italy.
“Made in Italy” excellence
1972 signed the creation of the “Le Bambole” collection of armchairs and sofas by Mario Bellini. A hallmark in the design industry, the Le Bambole was the first in B&B Italia to be awarded with the Compasso D’oro, the oldest institutional and most prestigious design recognition in the world. Four more Compasso D’oro awards followed: Sisamo in 1984, Sity in 1987, and in 1989, a career award bestowed for “constant integration carried out in order to combine the values of technical-scientific research with those necessary for the functionality and expressiveness of its products.” Most recently, the Serie Up designed in 1969 by Gaetano Pesce won the XXVII Compasso D’oro ADI – Product Career Award in 2022.
